Did you know avocados are actually a fruit and not a vegetable?! And did you know the avocado is often said to be the most nutritious fruit in the world?! It is! Avocados provide more than 25 essential nutrients such as protein, iron, copper, phosphorus, and magnesium, just to name a few but despite this, it also gets a bad rap for being a food high in “fat”.
When learning how to eat healthier, it’s important to understand how God created the foods we eat. Yes, avocados are high in fat, but it’s monounsaturated fat, which is a “good” fat that helps lower bad cholesterol, as long as you eat them in moderation. There is a misconception that foods high in fat are the culprit behind obesity but the root cause of weight gain and most diseases is sugar.
Avocados are low in sugar and they contain fiber, which helps you feel full longer. In one study, people who added a fresh half avocado to their lunch were less interested in eating during the next 3 hours than those who didn’t. The best part is there are so many ways to eat them too! I’m sharing 5 of my favorite recipes using avocados and some of these will probably surprise you (like the healthiest chocolate cake you don’t have to feel guilty about!)
